Beneath the Surface of Things

I’m embarrassed to admit that I’ve been blind and ignorant of one of the worlds wonders. How could such a thing as this escape my attention all these years?
Carlsbad Caverns is a cave, a big one. And for me it is a dramatic reminder just how vulnerable we are to ignore that which is just below the surface of things.
It is only because my journey took me to the southeast corner of New Mexico that I decided on a whim to check out this national park.
What a sight to behold. From first to last step you encounter fantastical formations the likes of which I have never seen, nor could have imagined in my wildest dreams.
These are not your ordinary stalactites and stalagmites but a bewildering array of columns, soda straws, draperies, helictites, and something called popcorn.
Deep underneath the caverns people like me point their cameras upon the wonder — but it’s a vain endeavor. One simply can’t capture what is beyond words to describe.
